Air Rangers - Air Quality Monitoring

Groundwork Richmond to Provide Purple Air Monitors for 20 Richmond Residents

Help Us Expand the Purple Air Sensor Network in Richmond!
Groundwork Richmond’s Air Rangers program is back for its third round of funding in the 2022-2024 cycle! We’re excited to offer Purple Air Sensors at no cost to over 20 Richmond residents. Our goal is to address the current disparity in the distribution of these sensors, particularly in the neighborhoods in a more close proximity to our chevron refinery .

How You Can Help:
We need your support to host these sensors and help expand the Purple Air Sensor network throughout Richmond. By hosting a sensor at your home, you’ll be playing an important role in improving air quality data for our community.

🔧 What’s Needed:
To host a Purple Air Sensor, all you need is:
Wi-Fi connection
Outdoor outlet (for the sensor)
A clear outdoor area to hang the monitor (away from obstructions like BBQ areas or trees)

What We Provide:

Free Installation: Groundwork's Green Team/ crew will come to your home, install the sensor, and guide you through the process of registering the device.
Community Impact: By participating, you'll contribute to providing real-time air quality data, helping us all better understand and address air quality issues in Richmond.

About the Air Rangers Program

🌬️Air Rangers Program: Empowering Richmond Through Air Quality Monitoring 💨

The Air Rangers Program is a key initiative of the Community Air Grants Program, designed to support community-based organizations in California working to implement AB 617. This program bridges the gap between communities, air districts, the California Air Resources Board, and other stakeholders, fostering strong collaborative relationships that drive real change in air quality.

Our Journey: Air Rangers 1 Launch In 2019, Groundwork Richmond launched Air Rangers 1, a groundbreaking pilot program combining Green Team and Green Corps members with environmental justice and citizen science. In partnership with the City of Richmond and Ramboll Engineering Consultancy, we trained our teams to:
  • Install remote air quality monitors in Richmond’s parks and public facilities.
  • Collect vital air quality data in SB 535 disadvantaged communities.
  • Share real-time air quality information with residents via Ramboll’s Shair Map.
🌬️ Making a Real DifferenceThis work has empowered residents with real-time data to make informed decisions about their health and environment.
