Groundwork Richmond, Rosie the Riveter, STOP and Sunnyside Organics
An exciting urban farm project is our partnership with
Rosie the Riveter Homefront National Historical Park, STOP and Sunnyside Organics. This is our second year at
Sunnyside Organics, a farm in North Richmond. The focus at Sunnyside this year was for the youth to learn
about running a farm, including working the land, animal husbandry, renovating
the green houses, cleaning, building and planting. One benefit of the program
is that youth learn about sustainable farming and healthy eating. They
also learn to cook and eat meals communally every day of the program.
Eight youth participated in the summer farm project this year. This summer our project extended invitations to the City of San Pablo and Contra Costa Office of Education’s Safe and Healthy Futures program , where approximately thirty-five youth attended a one week session at the farm working alongside their parents (twenty) to learn about sustainable farming and healthy eating. Our Green Team youth were role models to these middle-school youth, the goal being to engage the youth and interest them in the types of programs offered by the RoRi partnership with GWR.
